Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub that grows in India, the Middle East and some parts of Africa. Roots and orange-red fruits have been used for hundreds of years for medical purposes. The herb is also called Indian ginseng or winter cherry. The name ashwagandha describes the smell of the root (like a horse). By definition, ashwa means a horse.
The herb is considered to be one of the most important in the Ayurveda system - a practice that began in India 3000 years ago. Ayurvedic medicine uses herbs, special diets and other natural methods to treat various conditions. In Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is considered Rasayana. This means that Ashwagandha is a herb that helps maintain youth, both mentally and physically.
Recent studies have shown that ashwagandha has many applications.
Ashwagandha has a soothing effect on the symptoms of anxiety compared to the drug lorazepam (sedative medicine).
Ashwagandha is considered to be an agent that acts on the nervous system to prevent the transmission of pain signals. It is also believed to have some anti-inflammatory properties. For this reason, some studies have shown that it is effective in treating some forms of arthritis.
Ashwagandha may have different benefits for heart health, including treatment of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chest pain from heart disease.
Several studies have found that ashwagandha can stop cell growth in some types of cancer. Experiments on animals show the ability to reduce lung tumours. There are encouraging discoveries that show that ashwagandha has the potential to slow down human cancers, including breast, lung, kidney and prostate cancer.
