DAO catalyzes the oxidative deamination of the primary amino group from histamine to imidazole acetaldehyde, simultaneously producing hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. It is stored in plasma membrane vesicles in epithelial cells of the kidney and intestine and released into the circulation upon various stimulation. It is included in the group of copper amine oxidases, and its active form is the homodimeric with active cofactor 2,4,5-trihydroxyphenylalanine quinone. Its kinetics are 20 µmol/L for histamine, and its optimal functioning is at pH 7.2.
