MegaFolate is a nutritional supplement which contains 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) in the form of glucosaminic acid. That is the natural form of folic acid in the body that belongs to B group vitamins and is very essential, especially during conception, proper development of the fetus during pregnancy and many metabolic processes in the human body.
Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9. The name comes from the Latin word „folium“ which means leaf. Actually leafy vegetables are the best nutritional sources of folate.
The active form of vitamin B9 is folate, also known as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. It is the base of MegaFolate - every capsule contains 800 µg of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate - the active form of folic acid. It is a bioactive form which is absorbed in the body and is well recognized by the cells without methylation.
In certain genetic or hereditary disorders of metabolic disorders and in various physiological loads, the transformation of folic acid into the active form of folate is either not performed properly or is insufficient.
Unlike synthetic folic acid, folate form can reach the blood-brain barrier and is the natural folic acid that cells can recognize.
Main advantages of MegaFolate:
MegaFolate is a nutritional supplement that can be taken in the following conditions and diseases:
Folate is an essential micronutrient and critical cofactor in a variety of metabolic processes. It is very important during the first trimester of pregnancy when ann reduces the risk of brain and spinal cord damages
Folate functions as a coenzyme or cosubstrate in mono-carbon transfers in the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and amino acid metabolism. One of the most important reactions is the conversion of homocysteine to methionine in the synthesis of S-adenosyl-methionine - an important methyl donor.
Another folate-depending reaction - methylation of deoxy uridylate into thymidylate during DNA formation is necessary for the proper cell division.
The natural 5-MTHF in MegaFolate has important advantages over synthetic folic acid - it is well-absorbed even when gastrointestinal pH is changed and its bioavailability is not affected by metabolic defects.
The use of 5-MTHF instead of folic acid reduces the risk of hematologic symptoms of deficiency of vitamin B12, reduces the interaction with drugs that inhibit dihydrofolate reductase and overcomes metabolic defects caused by polymorphism of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase.
MTHFR gene gives instructions for the production of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase enzyme. It is responsible to transform folic acid into its natural form - 5-methyl-hydro folate, as well as for the processing of some amino acids.
There are some cases in which people have unfavourable MTHFR variation which means mechanisms, depending on that gene, are disturbed. Two of the most problematic types of MTHFR gene polymorphism are C677T and A1298C. When any of them is found, MTHFR enzyme mechanism is impaired, which causes increased homocysteine levels and methylation. These effects affect the absorption of folic acid and related processes.
It transforms folate form, also called 5,10-methyl-hydro folate. It is the same form as the one in Mega Folate and which remains naturally in the blood.
