The active form P5P is the only one of the six forms of vitamin B6 that can have a physiological effect in patients with the MTHFR mutation, which unfortunately affects over 60% of the European population. This genetic defect renders our bodies unable to convert standard forms of B6 into the metabolically active form pyridoxal 5 phosphate (P5P). This negative is also seen in patients with liver and intestinal diseases, increased alcohol consumption, acute intoxications and when working in toxic environments.

The active form of vitamin B6 is vital for:

  • Maintaining the proper structure and activity of many enzyme complexes;
  • Production of serotonin and dopamine and maintenance of nervous system activity, cognitive functions;
  • Regulation of stress levels and sleep quality;
  • Maintaining healthy levels of homocysteine, a metabolite that poses a high vascular risk;
  • Magnesium absorption in cells;
  • Metabolism and breakdown of nutrients;
  • Normal immune system functions, etc.
